'04 Sienna XLE woofer mounted in left side rear panel unit has started making the muffed sound of a torn cone. My Haynes manual does not cover this speaker location (a lot of stuff in the book omits this model completely or is wrong). So, I inspected the area and it seems I need to start removing trim and panels starting behind the sliding door in sequence until I can remove the actual panel. I do not see a way to just remove the grill area of the panel to access the speaker.

If you have ever had to get into this rear panel speaker and can give me any tips on the approach to getting this speaker out for inspection and/or replacement, I will most certainly appreciate it. I hope to start as soon as I can get a non-rain day.

Your best bet is to go register at Autozone and look at their repair manual and see if it lists the procedure. I think it will. Looking at my copy of the factory manual you have to remove the entire side panel to get at it. It says you have to remove these components first:

1. Side Door Scuff Plate (left side)
2. Rear Door Weatherstripping (left side)
3. Back Door Weathestripping (again...)
4. Back Door scuff plate

Then the trim panel has to come out, which it doesn't give in detail, but if it's like the right side, you need to:

1. Remove the seat belt bolt
2. Remove the cargo net hooks (the center part pulls out a bit to loosen the hook)
3. Remove the lamp cover that shines on the sliding door and disconnect the lamp connector
4. Start to pull out the panel. It apparently has 16 clips.

Thanks dandaman,
Your summary is what I needed to confirm my suspicions. That speaker is really layers of parts deep into the sequence of removal items! Got to replace/fix the driver's window system first and a regulator arrives tomorrow.. will try first without replacing motor since it will take 10 days after ordering. Then on to the radio speaker soon as next predicted rain days pass.
Thanks again.. was hoping there was a shortcut more directly to the speaker that I was overlooking.
