reliability of V6?

I've got an 89 pickup with 22re engine, going strong at 250,000 miles. I'm looking to get a pickup with a/c and king cab, and I can't find any with the 22re engine, they've all got the v6. All the ones with v6 seem to have engine rebuilds, new heads, etc, done around 140,000 miles. Is the v6 significantly less reliable? Should I stick to a 22re and deal with the limitations (can't find a king cab with the 22re)? I expect to buy a truck with 120,000 or more miles, and want to run it to 200,000 miles with minimal problems.

Thanks

it's a Toyota---
some early V-6 had problems--- but if that has been worked thru--- you are good to go---
any rig will last in proportion to the care it receives !

The 1988-95 Toyota 4-Runners/pickups equipped with 3VZE engine (3 liter,V6) had headgasket recall issues because story was that environmentalists and the like didn't want Toyota Japanese assembly line employees to be exposed to asbestos headgasket so Toyota opted to switch to a new non asbesto type which failed prematurely (see official recall documents below).

The 1988-95 Toyota 4-Runners/pickups powered by the 3VZE in my opinion are sluggish,gas-aholic,complicated and less reliable than the legendary 22R series of Toyota engines which are bullet proof as can be seen by these testimonials:

How much gas does your truck guzzle? My 22re gets about 19 mpg highway. What can i expect with a v6?

O.K. So, the 3VZE wasnt exactly the Bing cherry of Toyota engineering, but its not as bad as everyone makes it to be.

What to expect with a 3VZE: Not exceptionally high MPG's. Running B.P. 87 octane the last three tanks driving like an a-hole, i got 17-18.5. Livable. the V6 is a little underpowered, but not near to the degree of the 22re. Torqueier than hell, and great at high way speeds. Knock on wood, mine has treated me just fine. Just dont get the auto if you know how to drive a stick.

What to expect with a 22RE: Decently good gas milage. Not unheard of to get 25 MPG. the 22re is signifigantly under powered. I have owned and driven both, and never again would i go back to the 22RE. even with my autotragic, i prefer the 3VZE to the 22re with a manual. Expect legendary reliability, but not as good as all say. I think the 22re is often chalked up as the little engine that could. I have known a lot of people that had to do a complete rebuild of a 22re (top and bottom) and no one that had to do it to a 3VZE (personally speaking).

Bottom line: If you find a V6, do yourself a favor, call toyota, make sure the headgasket recall was done. If it was, and it runs strong, AND its a manual, dont be afraid. It will treat you good. My $.02 from my experience with both.

My 1988 Toyota pickup (3.0L v6, 4wd, automatic, regular cab, longbed, w/6" lift) was a great truck. In fact, my truck was just shy of 200,000 miles when someone broadsided me and totaled the truck. With almost 200,000 on the odometer it was still running great and I have no doubt it would have easily made it to 300,000 miles without any major problems. I never had to do any major engine work to it (I had a tune-up done around 120,000 miles flushing all the fluids, and replacing things such as the belts and water pump) and never had any engine problems at all. I drove that truck VERY HARD- and that was with heavy 33" tires and 6" of lift. When I bought the truck it had 75,000 miles on it and the only thing the previous owner had done with the engine was take it to Toyota for the head-gasket recall. People give the 3.0L a bad rap and it does not deserve it, with just basic routine maintenance that engine will last a VERY LONG time.

The 3VZE 3.0L v6 has pretty much the same amount of power as the 3RZFE 2.7L 4 cylinder that was available in Pre-Runner/4wd 1995.5-2004 Toyota Tacomas. It won't win many races, but it also won't leave you stranded on the side of the road either.

Some crappy pics of my 1988 (I have some better pics of it...I just have to find them):

That's so nice of you, taking that sick deer to the animal hospital!

The success of your engine was probably aided greatly by the head gasket at 75k.

No way you got 35mpg from a 3.0 or a 22re
there is not way in hell.

unless you are a 2wd, no bed, no interior.. etc.

yeah, sorry but im gonna have to call bs on that one.
I never said I got 35mpg, I said I got 30.

But to be fair, when I said that, I really meant like 28, or 29.

But yeah, it is a '92 22re 2wd pickup.

My driving habits consist of things that probably annoy other drivers like coasting to red lights, not downshifting hardly ever, going 55 on the freeway when I safely can, etc.
