^+1 to what Kingdom said. Also, for future reference, there's a build sticker on the driver's door or door jamb that has the transmission used, among other things. In this example:

Paint code = 1C0
Interior code = LA17
Trans = U150E.

 

For 2001 you should see something like A/TM: xxxxx/A140E. That's the A140E 4-speed automatic transmission, IMO way more reliable than the U-series that came after.

 

Take a picture of the paper on the driver door jamb and upload here

 

I'd hate to resurrect this old thread. I have a 2001 Camry with a donor door off another vehicle, and I have no documents from the old door. Is there any other way to identify the transmission for the 2.2?

 

Yes as others mentioned should be the A140e if it's the automatic. You can search up pictures of the transmission on eBay as well.

Here's the pan gasket and strainer on rockauto (look at the A140e ones), you can take a look at your pan too.

The manual I have indicates A140E if automatic.

 

If it’s an automatic, it’s the A140E. If it’s a manual transmission, it’s the S51.

 

Why is everyone posting replies to a questioned posted 2 years ago by a member who has been banned?

 

For Roober, who needed help ID’ing his transmission. The other answers in this thread didn’t help him, as his door has been replaced.
