Dome light fixture upgrade

Can anyone here advise if the newer style dome lights (from the 07-08 vehicles with the switch) be swapped into older vehicles without the switch?

Older style
New style

If so, how does one remove the base fixture from the roof/headliner?

Yikes! I was really hoping I didn’t have to take the headliner off. Seems to be more hassle than it’s worth it seems like?

Sounds good! Any idea if the wiring for the switches are different or if they are plug and play?

The latest MYs never came with the rheostat? Interesting. Admittedly, all the Corollas in the local 2 JYs here have always been 03-05s for some reason - so I’ve never really seen the inside of an 07-08 Corolla

My hope was it is plug and play - and the switch on the newer style dome lights could serve as a second switch as long as the rheostat was in the “on” section.

Here’s a picture of the wiring harness on my ‘05:

The rheostat is the wheel to adjust both the background light of the cluster and turn on the dome light.

In my 06 corolla, I have a rheostat wheel, but tried using one with the dome light switch. It didn't work just by swapping it.

What's the cost of the newer light in the junkyard? If it's under 5$, grab it and hook it up. Never know, the switch could work or not.

Could possibly re wire it to work. It seems to be just an added switch interface to turn it on or off but it’s just going to be a little wonky to play with because it would run through two switches instead of one. I have mine off at all times.

That’s interesting. I ended up getting the fixture from the junkyard. The ‘07 I got it off has a dimmer wheel but I guess I didn’t try and see if it had the on/off positions like my 05 does.
So they swap 1:1. BUT, the switch doesn’t do anything in the “door” position.
In the on position, the light works just like in the old one.
I guess I could live with the new dome light as is. It gives me the opportunity to be able to turn off the dome light while opening the door without having to mess with the dimmer wheel. Also the cover in the 07 is less opaque than the one in the 05. So it’s marginally more light inside the car.
Any ideas on if there’s an easy way to get the constant on without having to run another add a fuse? I don’t really have any more space in my under dash fuse box....

I believe if you have the dimmer the function that turns on the light when you have the door open is built into the lighting. Play with the switch on the dash and I believe the dimmer should control it. My car turns on with door open on the on position and dimmed position.

Meaning, I don’t think you can breakout the door switch on that assembly without changing the original switch
