Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum, I posted in the audio forum, but not getting any info, so thought I would try here.

I have a 1992 Camry LE that I recently purchased as a work car that I discovered has a factory CD player. It was a surprise as the car is an LE and I imagine it was a fairly rare option?

I was pretty sure it wouldn't work as most old CD players do not, but I thought what the heck and put in a couple of new CD's to see what would happen. It powers on and the numbers will move on the screen as if it is turning the disc, but there is no sound. I can skip to the next song, etc. There are no error codes on the screen. The radio works, so I know the speakers are ok. It is likely just worn out after 24 years of use, or would maybe a CD disc cleaner help it? It also has cassette, but I do not have those anymore. I have tons of CD's from when I had my 1993 Cadillac and 1995 Lincoln, both of which had CD players. My new car has CD, but it also has XM radio, so I usually play that, so would love to have some music I like in the Camry when I drive it.

Thanks!

Amazing that an LE came with a CD and especially 1992.

My 1992 Camry XLE came with an Individual CD Player and the issue is that there is a rather large cable going from the CD player to the Radio. After years there is corrosion build up and you need to see about cleaning this connector so, you would need to remove at least the CD Player, assuming you are talking about the One Unit Self Contained CD Player and separate from the Radio.

EDIT: Try to see if this "LE" came with a Factory AMPLIFIER as this might be your issue!!! See those subsequent discussion threads I posted in my later replies! Perhaps someone added this CD Player to this vehicle and didn't come from factory!

These CD Players are very hard to find and my last one was at a salvage yard in eBay and was able to get one in wonderful working condition. However, I have moved on and installed a modern radio / CD Player combo but, I have retained all the STOCK Radio and CD Player in a box for safe keeping.

Oh, I almost forgot..................

The trouble with these Separate CD Players, at least down here in the Heat and High Humid conditions of Central Florida "is" that these units get very HOT after a full play of one album (CD). I noticed that there is NO vent providing any air flow (Air condition duct or vent) to allow for air cooling.

To save the unit (CD Player) I usually give it at least 10 minutes of rest before I insert another music CD.

If I was going to keep the STOCK components, this is the time that I have already devised a way to provide an added AC DUCT to provide air flow at the rear of the unit from within the Dash.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, mine has the CD player just like the one in the pic there, it is below the radio and has "Toyota" on it. I thought it was odd as well that it had one, I was assuming it was a factory option since the sales brochure does indicate that the CD was optional on the LE Camry in '92.

About that spray, I am all of the easy way out if at all possible, lol. I am not very good at taking things apart, I can tear things about though. lol. Where do you get it and do you just spray it in the slot? I was thinking about getting a can of air and spray in there and hope it was just full of dust, but I doubt it is that easy. :)

Thanks again.

You are most welcomed.

The CRC 2-26 spray can be found at any Lowe's Home Improvement "or" HOMEDEPOT box stores and usually in the Electrical Dept.

Clean connector and make sure you wipe off excess before reconnecting to back of Radio!

I have the 3 disc cd changer installed in my 94 XLE. I found it at a dealership and installed it myself back in 1999 or 2000. When I first plugged it in it exhibited no sound out of one of the speakers. The radio sound was normal. I simply unplugged that 13 pin connector and plugged it back in and the unit worked fine. I experience this problem every few years and unplugging it and plugging it back in works every time to restore the sound. It may be some dirt or condensation on the connector or in the connector on the back of the radio and unplugging and replugging it seems to create a new connection path. Give this a try if you haven't already done it.

Mike

PS: I have heard the connector on the back of the radio referred to as a DIN plug.

Hello,

Nope, I actually haven't had time to mess with it due to work and helping out some sick relatives. I did manage to get the "dog-bone" replaced this evening, not sure when I can get to the CD player, hoping I can remove it without breaking anything. I think I will try the CD cleaner first since it seems like the easiest thing to do.

I will definitely report back my results when I do. :)

Thanks!

it sounds like it hasn't been cleaned in a while, you might have to use a flashlight and a long stick cotton swab with a bit of cleaner or alcohol on it to get in to the laser to clean it. i think many have forgotten about the good old days of lp/8-track/cassette/vhs/dvd cleaners, with the advent of the mp3 player which needs nothing except a charge every so often.
