I have a 2006 Avalon xls and when trying to find a battery for it, two different group sizes come up: 24F and 35. Does anyone know what size I really need?
Thank you

can I just remove and replace or is there a procedure afterwards that tells the car a battery is hooked up. I ask this because if I don't enter a code in the radio after replacing my odyssey battery, the van won't start

I am on my 3rd battery, and no security codes were required. However, the power window and sunroof controls must be "re-initialized" after a battery disconnect to restore the "one touch close" feature. You can fine instructions in an earlier message thread on this page:

The 24F is slightly larger than the Group 35. So a Duralast Gold 24F will have a better CCA rating than a Duralast Gold Group 35, because there is more room inside the battery for lead and acid. But a Duralast Gold Group 35 is better than a Duralast Silver 24F.

So for best results, go with 24F.

I would surmise and say go to Costco and get their 24F size battery made by Interstate. Or Advanced Auto location if you live near one, since they usually have good deals floating online. 24F is the right size since the 35 (made better for Corolla) is too small for the Camrys, Avalons and Siennas.

Regarding resets for the pwr windows and sunroof, here ya go:

Copied from TSB PD002-05

“NOTE:
Anytime the battery terminal has been disconnected, please initialize the driver’s door
power window and front passenger’s door power window after reconnecting the
battery terminal.

With ignition switch in the “ON” position, do the following:

1. Push down and hold the driver’s door power window switch to completely open
the window.
2. Pull and hold up the driver’s door power window switch until the window closes.
Continue holding the switch for approximately one second until the switch changes
from blinking to a constant illumination.
3. Check for proper operation of the “one–touch open and close” function by fully
pushing the switch briefly to the “DOWN” and “UP” positions.

At this time the power window switch for the passenger’s door window should
be blinking.
4. Push down and hold the passenger’s door power window switch to completely open
the window.
5. Pull and hold up the passenger’s door power window switch until the window closes.
Continue holding the switch for approximately one second until the switch changes
from blinking to a constant illumination.
6. Check for proper operation of the “one–touch open and close” function by fully
pushing the switch briefly to the “DOWN” and “UP” positions.

Sunroof initialization is similar.”

Sams Club Duracell 24F in my '11 Avalon and '04 Camry and '08 Highlander and.....

I would take a 24F over 35 simply for better performance. Ran the Highlander on battery only for an 90 minutes while driving it home on a dead alternator. Comparing the sizes, 35 has a reserve capacity of 95 minutes and the 24F is 120 minutes.

Walmart 24F Everstart Maxx is $10 cheaper than the Duracell, and in my experience, just as good.

I had a Duracell from Sam's before in my Corolla, and it leaked. At that time, it was before Costco started offering Interstate batteries, and the old brand Kirkland didn't have a Group 24F battery before the switch.

The most important thing to consider when choosing to replace battery with a group 24F or 35 is the dimensions. Group 24F batteries measure 10.3 x 6.8 x 8.9, whereas the Group 35 batteries measure 9.1 x 6.9 x 8.9 (~1 inch in length), so ensure that the 24F you intend to buy can get in your battery box.

Differences in other specs like CCA or RC depends on different batteries from different brands, but MUST go for one that has the same or a slightly higher CCA rating than the one in your car now.

If you're a normal person always get more CCA
The Costco interstate is really good and has a no hassle exchanges warranty
I ended up with a group 34r agm from xs power
I would go for a Walmart brand battery. Its gotten excellent reviews and is far less expensive. Interstate is great too! Plus made in America and owned by Christians but is $60-$80 more expensive.
Actually we should support everything made in America. I just changed my own mind. Ha! Get Interstate!

I got a new Costco Interstate 24F in the 09 XL. The battery tray is for a 24. The 35 battery that was in it is too small and it moved around the tray. plus now it has larger CA and CCA.

I have three Camry with 2010 Camry asking for 24F and 1998 Camry for 35.
I normally match battery age to car's age by putting a new battery in the newer car and move the old battery into the older car. Group sizes 24F and 35 fit both mode years.
Glancing through the price/life difference, it seems making sense to put AGM battery next time as it only costs 60% more.
However the 35 AGM costs $5 cheaper (with slightly lower CCA) than 24F AGM. For southern states without demand for peak CCA, it makes no difference.

Just a thought.

I should have gotten the 24F instead of the 35. I didn't realize I had a 24F in the car. It was a 5 year Ever Maxx and it has been 5 years and 6 months since I put it in and not problem, just changing for preventative maintenance... I bet there is less strain so it can last longer in the bigger battery...(Oh I have 2007 Toyota Avalon)

24F is a bigger battery and fits better in the engine bay hold downs. Scrap the 35 when its old or dies and get your 24F. You may need to "re-program" your window buttons after disconnecting a battery
