Well, that explains a lot. I thought I was losing my mind. I was told a shot of WD-40 where the column goes into the firewall may clear up the whine. Thanks Robert!

 

It's In There.....Somewhere

Purchased a 2015 Avalon about 2 weeks ago and have a slight whine when I turn the steering wheel.

One of many nuggets buried in the owner's manual awaiting your discovery:

"■EPS operation sound

When the steering wheel is operated, a motor sound (whirring sound) may be heard. This does not indicate a malfunction."

The sound you hear is normal. It is the electric power steering. I have a 2014 Avalon. It has always made a slight whirring noise when turning the steering wheel.

 

Purchased a 2015 Avalon about 2 weeks ago and have a slight whine when I turn the steering wheel.

Turn the music a bit louder.

 

My 2014 Avalon is also recently whining. My wife says it sounds like an owl. I mentioned it to my service manager while I was picking up my 2019 and he said it is the rubber boot and next time I bring it in they will spray some silicon lube on it.

 

I sprayed some silicone on mine this morning and the whine stopped.

 

as a substitute blinker fluid may be used, get the metric bottle tho

WD-40 Did the Trick

I decided to spray the boot where the steering column goes into the firewall/floor board. A couple of sprays and the whining was gone. That won't be annoying me anymore. Thanks for everybody's input. Greatly appreciated!!!

I went out just now and sprayed mine. I didn't look for the other end under the car. When we go to dinner tonight I'll see if it helped.


It worked, The owl flew off.
